Hospital Diabetes Team Wins National Award

A new hospital scheme which teaches diabetics how to manage their condition has won a national award.
The team of doctors and nutritionists at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital has landed the Arun Baksi Award for innovation in diabetes care for their work with patients.
Called ‘REACCT’ (Re-education and Carbohydrate Counting Training), the programme provides insulin-treated diabetic patients with advice and information on nutrition, exercise and how to cope with the social effects of their condition.
Dr Thomas Ulahannan, a Consultant in Diabetes, said: “We were delighted to win this award as we are really proud of the service we offer.
“We felt that there was a need for a flexible, short course that would help diabetic patients stabilise their blood sugar levels and teach them how to manage their condition.
“We have had some really good feedback from our patients, some of whom are newly-diagnosed, but also from those patients who had slipped into bad habits and needed a bit of help getting back on track.”
The REACCT scheme, which is run by Consultant Diabetologist Dr Ulahannan, Diabetes Dietician Fiona Davis and Diabetes Specialist Nurse, Wilma Ross, has now been up and running for more than a year and has treated more than 120 patients with type 1 diabetes.
While other schemes across the country offer courses lasting several days for diabetic patients, REACCT was designed to give patients who work or have children flexibility. The courses are held every Tuesday for two hours and patients are encouraged to attend to sessions, six weeks apart.
Dr Ulahannan added: “The team is delighted to have received the
award but is even more delighted that the programme has been successful
for the patients.”
