Unicef Director Hands Over Top Award to St Paul's Wing

19/12/2006

Midwives at St Paul’s Wing in Cheltenham had a special delivery of their own when a Unicef Director visited the unit to present the coveted Baby Friendly Initiative award.

The Baby Friendly Initiative was started by the World Health Organisation and Unicef to encourage hospitals to implement best feeding practices, in particular breastfeeding. The two international organisations recognised that routine hospital practices such as separating mothers and babies and giving breastfed babies formula milk when this is not clinically necessary make it harder for mothers to breastfeed.  Now, hospitals which advise mums to stay close to their new-borns and if possible breast feed is proven to be the best possible service a maternity unit can give.

St Paul’s Wing is only the fiftieth maternity unit to receive this prestigious award having worked for years to introduce new ways of operating to give mum and baby the best start in life.

Director of Baby Friendly Initiative UK, Sue Ashmore said” I’m absolutely delighted to present this award to St Paul’s Wing which has worked very hard over a number of years. This is in recognition of all the effort the midwives have put in.”
