New conference to help staff break through career barriers
15/03/2007
A brand new conference aimed at motivating, developing and inspiring health and social care staff is coming to the South West.
A first of its kind for the region, the South West Breaking Through Leadership Conference will give health and social care workers a chance to find out what opportunities are available to develop their career.
Organised by Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the event has a particular focus on motivating staff from Black and Minority Ethnic backgrounds.
“Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is committed to equal opportunities, with non-white and non-British staff making up ten per cent of the organisation” commented Errol Bryan, equality and diversity manager. “We also know that the same proportion are in management roles but we recognise that there is a lot more that can be done to further encourage people to get them to where they want to be.”
But it’s not just staff from the Trust that will be inspired. The invite has been extended to other trusts and social services departments from across the South West. And the Chief Executive from NHS South West, Sir Ian Carruthers will be speaking at the event.
Giving the conference his full support, Sir Carruthers said, “If the NHS is to maintain and develop its reputation as a world-class service, it must treat patients and staff with fairness, dignity and equality.
“This means equity of access to treatment for all NHS patients. It means too that the NHS needs to demonstrate that it is an employer of choice, with a real focus on providing opportunities for staff from all backgrounds.
“This conference is an important chance to discuss the issues, share examples of good practice and provide practical support for people from Black and Ethnic Minorities to develop their careers in the NHS.”
The conference will take place at Cheltenham Racecourse on Tuesday May 15 and is backed by the National Breaking Through Programme, the South West Learning and Skills Council, Gloucestershire County Council, Gloucestershire Community Counts and GDR Solutions.
