Family puts best foot forward for intensive care team

A family from Hucclecote will be donning their walking boots and taking part in a 15k hike in aid of Gloucestershire Royal Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Iain Killingbeck, 30, his mother Madeleine, 59, and his partner Lucy Webster, are hoping to raise as much as they can in memory of Iain’s father Stephen, who died in the ICU in November last year after being diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus.
Iain said: “My dad was in the ICU for about a month and the staff there were absolutely amazing. He had really great care and we want to raise some money to say thank you for everything they did for him.”
In particular, Iain and his mum want to be able to buy the unit a TV, DVD and CD player to help provide some entertainment for the patients as well as the visitors who often spend many hours at their loved ones bedside.
Madeleine added: “The nursing care Steve had was brilliant. But the nurses all looked after me too which made a real difference to our experience. We’d really love to give them something back.”
Liz Maggs, Lead Nurse for the unit, said: “The team was very upset when Stephen passed away but we are happy that his family were so pleased with the care he received.
“We are also very touched that Madeleine and her family want to help us improve our service even further by donating these gifts and we thank them very much on behalf of our patients.”
Iain, Madeleine and Lucy will be taking part in the Just Walk event, at Goodwood Racecourse, Chichester, on Saturday, May 19. To sponsor them call Madeleine on 01452 613 810.
