Comment: Clamped Cars
04/04/2007
Graham Lloyd, Director of Corporate Governance and Facilities said:
“We were notified this morning that a number of cars belonging
to our staff had been clamped. We would like to make it clear that we
did not give the clamping company permission to clamp these cars and
following discussions with the company this morning, they have agreed
to reimburse those concerned. The decision to clamp is at the discretion
of my team and not a decision made by an external company. It is also
important to remember that we do not profit from clamping and this morning
was purely an error on the part of the clamping company.
“However, the Trust remains determined to ensure that there is no abuse of disabled spaces. For nearly a year we have operated a zero tolerance policy towards any drivers who park in disabled bays without displaying a valid badge. We need to remember that this policy was introduced in response to concerns from patients and disability groups because there was growing evidence that non-disabled drivers were using the spaces reserved for them.
“On the Gloucestershire Royal Hospital site we currently have 92 public disabled spaces. For staff, we have dedicated car parks, some of which are exclusively for late shift workers and parents who need to drop children to and from school. In total the Trust has 1103 staff spaces available on the Gloucestershire Royal site.
“We regularly monitor our car parks and how many people use them. At Gloucestershire Royal we know that a large number of staff drive off the site after 5.30pm leaving space for late shift workers. It would appear that some staff were not acting in accordance with our policy and we will be talking to them find out why they felt the need to park in disabled bays.”
