New critical care unit for Gloucestershire Royal

02/08/2007

Patients requiring intensive or high dependency care are set to benefit from a new, state-of-the-art critical care unit at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital (GRH).

The Trust hopes to create a brand new department with space for 13 beds in a £2.9million scheme which is due to be completed by August 2008.

The project, which has received the green light by the Board, would see the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and High Dependency Units (HDU) combine to create a more spacious, modern and efficient department which would treat the most critically ill patients.

Adrian Eggleton, Associate Director of Planning, said: “This project is good news for the patients of Gloucestershire, and their visiting families. We will be updating the department, creating more space in which to treat critically ill patients in a more hygienic, 21st Century environment, affording patients and family greater privacy, in what is a stressful and emotional time.

“The new unit will have more side rooms and two dedicated pressurised isolation rooms which can help when treating patients with infectious diseases such as tuberculosis.

“Our plans are to refurbish the whole of the first floor of the tower block, to create an integrated unit which gives greater flexibility for the treatment of patients. This follows the recent works of Ward 2b, and is part of a long programme of refurbishment in the tower block.

“This project also demonstrates the Trust’s commitment to a sustainable Gloucestershire, and minimising our impact on the environment. Refurbishing existing facilities, where the basic fabric of the building is in good condition has far less impact on the environment than demolition and a new build. In this project the Trust has been working in partnership with local designers, it will also be built by a local contractor, ensuring jobs remain in the county. ”

Last year the ICU and HDU departments at GRH treated 724 patients, all with very complex needs and requiring treatment from highly skilled professionals.

The new unit will remain on the first floor of the Tower Block at GRH but the space will be reorganised to create greater capacity and flexibility for future development.
