Renowned painter brings the seaside to Cheltenham General

03/07/2007

Cheltenham General Hospital is giving members of the public a chance to get a rare glimpse of paintings by celebrated artist John Miller.

A stunning collection of works by the renowned painter are to go on display at the hospital’s Star Gallery this week.

The Cornish artist, who died in 2002, was particularly famous for his ‘seascapes’, images that have become a universal icon of tranquility.

John was born in London in 1931. He moved to Cornwall in 1958 and first became known for his paintings of the magical landscape of the West Penwith peninsula. His paintings are exhibited in many countries throughout the world where they are in public, corporate and private collections including the Victoria & Albert Museum, Truro Cathedral, the John Lewis Partnership and Royal Cornwall Hospital. In 1995 he moved to a studio on a beach near St Ives where he painted images of the sea.

Emily Malins, Arts Co-ordinator for Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “It’s an honour for us to be hosting this special exhibition. There are few people who would not recognise John’s seascapes. They may have seen a greeting card or possibly a print of this work, so it is great to be able to give them an opportunity to see the originals at their local hospital.”

Twenty percent of the proceeds of any works that are sold during the exhibition will go towards Arts in Trust, the ongoing arts program for the organisation.

The exhibition, entitled Far Horizons, will run from July 4 until September 13 and will be held in the Star Gallery, near the Paediatrics Department in College Road Wing.
