The spotlight’s on GRH in new Department of Health report

04/06/2007

Gloucestershire Royal Hospital features in a new Department of Health report published on Tuesday 5 June.

Entitled “Rebuilding the NHS – a new generation of healthcare facilities”, the report highlights 17 out of 88 major NHS building schemes across England. And included is Gloucestershire Royal Hospital’s £32 million extension.

Based in the city of Gloucester, the Gloucestershire Royal Hospital was in desperate need of a revamp with some services being carried out in old isolated huts and pre-war buildings. A £32million PFI scheme was approved in 2002 to enable Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust the opportunity to replace the unsuitable facilities.

Two years later, the modern buildings were opened to patients, visitors, staff and the public. And in March 2005, Dr John Reid, the former Secretary of State for Health, officially opened the new development, which comprises a state-of-the-art children’s centre, emergency department, cardiology ward, therapy rooms, spacious outpatient clinics and waiting rooms as well as shop and café.

Lead Physiotherapist, Gill Banner who has worked at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital for almost seven years remembers the cold, dark buildings they used to work in and is glad of the new facilities. She commented: “Our old building was not well suited to patient care as it was dark, draughty and absolutely dreadful. It’s nice to have a purpose built facility that is pleasant for patients and is clean and accessible. It’s a real improvement which has had a positive impact on our patients, their visitors and on us as staff.”
