More than 100 staff from Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust will be recognised for their learning achievements at the Trust’s Annual Certificate Presentation.
The event, which takes place on Thursday June 7, will be attended by the Chair of the Trust, Dame Janet Trotter, and Paul Lilley, Chief Executive of the Trust.
36 year-old Mark Histed, the programme manager for Gloucestershire Diabetic Eye Screening Service at Cheltenham General Hospital will be one member of staff picking up a certificate on the night. The father of two from Dursley has achieved a certificate in Diabetic Eye Screening. Mark is one of only two people to hold the qualification in the UK and said “The Gloucestershire Diabetic Eye Screening team were honoured to have been chosen to be part of the pilot for the diabetic eye screening certificate qualification. This new national qualification will help us and other services within the UK to deliver an even better quality of care to diabetic patients.
Sue Cowburn, a 48 year-old health care assistant and grandmother of two from Gloucester, will also pick up her NVQ level 2 in Care at the event. Sue who left school at 16 and had children at a young age says it great to be given another chance to learn. She said, “I didn’t think I’d ever get the chance to obtain another qualification. At the time I started the course, I was relocating, along with my team from Standish Hospital to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, so there was some interruption to my studies. As a mature student, I also have to juggle my commitments at home and work as well as find the time to complete the course. But I’ve finished it and I feel good about that.”
Doreen Horsfall, 59, an administration manager at CGH, will join fellow staff members on the night. Doreen from Tewkesbury completed a City and Guilds in Administration and Management Systems. She said juggling work with study was challenging: “The qualification I undertook was only introduced last year therefore it was new to a lot of us. I hadn’t done any academic learning for a long time, but I found it interesting and would like to do more.”
The Annual Certificate Presentation has been organised by the Trust’s Learning and Development Department, which encourages all staff to undertake further study and gain qualifications which are relevant to their careers.
The department supports many staff each year in gaining NVQ and a range of other qualifications, the majority of which are provided in-house without the need for staff to attend college elsewhere. Most of the NVQs offered by the Trust are accredited through City & Guilds of London, with whom the Trust has multi-sector quality assurance status, the highest possible level.
