Comment: Ward closures

24/04/07

A spokesman for the Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said: “We can confirm that a total of eight patients are currently affected by diarrhoea and vomiting on one ward at Cheltenham General Hospital.

“As the number of cases of diarrhoea and vomiting on this ward is above what we normally expect we have taken the precaution of closing it. This measure, along with enhanced ward hygiene, has been implemented to minimise any possible infection risk to patients.

“We aim to re-open the ward when all affected patients have been free of symptoms for 72 hours and the area has been thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.

“We would like to reassure everyone that the Trust is used to managing incidents like these. Ward staff are following strict infection control precautions such as increased hand washing along with the other measures such as restrictions on the movement of patients.”
