New head and neck ward opens at GRH

Patients admitted to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital with head or neck conditions are benefiting from a newly revamped ward from this week.
Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust which is responsible for the Gloucester-based hospital, invested £1.5million on Ward 2B.
“We are delighted with our new environment,“ said Paul Garrett, Divisional Director for Nursing. “The number of beds we had has been reduced, but this means all our side rooms now have ensuite facilities, which patients prefer, and also gives us better control on infection risks. In addition, we have ensuite facilities for each bay, helping patients enjoy more privacy and dignity. These developments are good news for patient care.”
Ward 2B, which is located in the Tower Block currently has five side rooms and a total of 17 beds in its bays.
Hygiene and infection control is a top priority for the Trust and as a result all windows have been designed with integrated blinds and sloping window sills to ease cleaning. And to keep dust to a minimum, radiators have been discarded in favour of a heating system that’s been fitted into the ceiling.
In addition the Trust, which is committed to the environment, has fitted Ward 2B with brand new eco-friendly windows and motion sensitive lighting. And security to the ward has been upgraded thanks to the installation of a swipe card system. This means only staff can access the unit directly, out of hours.
The refurbishment, which took seven months to complete, is part of an ongoing plan to fully re-design all the wards in the Tower Block. Work to revamp Intensive Care Unit and the High Dependency Unit at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital will begin in the summer.
