Putting Play In The Picture

15/10/2007

Artist Sean Edwards has been putting his skills into practice at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital as part of his Elixir residency.

Uniting eight artists with eight hospital departments, the residencies are supported by Stroud Valleys Artspace, who curate the programme with artNucleus.

A large plasma screen in the main atrium of the hospital is showing a programme of their work, which includes performance, video and animation.

Sculptor Sean is concentrating on the role of play specialist, one which he believes can often be misunderstood.

“The Play Specialist’s role is an invaluable cog in the care and treatment of children and adolescents within many areas of the hospital,” he said.

“Their role, in bridging the gap between home and hospital life, encourages the patients to discuss their apprehensions and misunderstandings about the treatments they are about to receive through the language of play.”

Sean uses in a wide variety of media including film and installation. He has been working with children and trust staff and is using computer animation to help shed more light on what play specialists do.

The Haematology, Accident and Emergency, Nuclear Medicine and Health Records and Outpatients Management departments hosted artists in the first round of the Elixir project.

The second round of residencies, which lasts from April until this month, includes Domestic Services, Paediatric Oncology, Pharmacy, and Play Specialists.

The lead artist for this project is Simon Ryder, whose residence is in Nuclear Medicine. His residency has spanned the length of both the first and second residencies, so he will be finishing in November along with his four colleagues.
