Footballers Scoring Funds For Emergency Department

22/10/2007

Big hearted players from the North Gloucestershire Associated Football League (NGAFL) have kept the fundraising ball rolling for 100 years.

In the last century they have raised and donated more than £38,000 to different departments at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital.

And with some footballers tackling injuries on the pitch, they’ve just donated £2,250 to the Emergency Department, now their department of choice for the next coming years.

“It seemed fitting that we should help the department help us,” said League Secretary Pete Bowlzer. “If any of our players are unfortunate enough to have an accident while playing, they will surely end up in the Emergency Department.”

The JO Roberts Cup, Geo Sandoe Cup and FJ Pope Cups are fiercely contested within the league every season. Teams are drawn for the knockout competition at the AGM in June, and at every game the home team is expected to hold a draw or raffle, donating the money to the fund.

In April Woolaston FC won the JO Roberts Cup, Coleford United won the Geo Sandoe Cup, and Mitcheldean A won the FJ Pope Cup, and the first round for this season started last weekend (October 13).

Lead nurse for Emergency Care, Phil Downing, said: “We are very grateful to all members of the NGAFL for their kind donation.

“We haven’t decided just yet what to purchase with the funds, but are waiting on quotes for some equipment. We are looking to buy either Thomas or Donway splints which we use to hold broken legs stable prior to patients going to the operating theatre.”

Mr Bowlzer added: “Our aim is to raise more money each year and therefore make a bigger donation every year. This is the first time I’ve been able to make a donation to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital as this is my first full season as League Secretary. I really feel like we’re doing some good, and this is thanks solely to the players and clubs of the NGAFL.”
