Statement: Clostridium Difficile and MRSA
24/09/2007
Dr Jim Stone, Director of Infection Prevention and Control at Gloucestershire
Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said:
"The Trust takes the control of infection extremely seriously and
have redoubled our efforts over the past year to minimise the risk of
patients acquiring infections when they come into hospital.
"We are pleased to report that, in August we had not a single case
of MRSA bacteraemia (MRSA in the blood) for the first time since cases
began to be officially recorded several years ago and have only had two
cases in September so far. The number of cases of Clostridium difficile
diarrhoea has also continued to fall month-on-month since April this
year. In that month we had a total of 93 cases across the Trust. By August
this had fallen to 38 per month and, in September, we have had just 15
after 3 weeks.
"However, we are not being complacent and are continually undertaking
additional measures to further reduce numbers of cases.
"On behalf of the Infection Control Team I would like to thank all
of our staff for their continued dedication and commitment to tacking
infection".
