LINAC Project Takes Shape
14/02/2008
Helping to improve treatment for patients, the multi-million pound Oncology and Endoscopy project is well under way at Cheltenham General Hospital.
The £6 million scheme is a two storey extension of the existing Oncology Centre at the east side of the hospital, off Keynsham Road.
On the ground floor there will be two new Linear Accelerator (Linac) bunkers, for the treatment of Oncology patients, with the first additional Linac machine costing £1.2 million, scheduled for delivery in early 2009.
A Linac is a sophisticated machine that produces the high energy x-rays used to carefully deliver precise radiotherapy treatment to patients.
The work means the closure of the Oncology public car park from Friday February 15. Oncology staff will be directing patients with exemption passes to use the Sandford Road car park.
A spokesman for Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said: “We
understand that visiting hospital can often be a stressful experience,
and
appreciate the impact this construction will have, especially on parking
facilities for staff and patients.
“We are doing our best to respond to these by seeking alternative
parking
options and trying to find the best solution. The Trust has recently
announced
the launch of a new park and ride service to the hospital from March
17.
“The project will be of enormous benefit to many patients by improving
facilities and helping to reduce waiting times with additional radiotherapy
machines.”
Updates will follow as the situation changes. For more information on

County Council website
