Modern Matrons are here!

06/06/2008

Modern Matrons are driving up standards of care and cleanliness in Gloucestershire hospitals.

Figures released today (Friday 6 June 2008) show that the number of Matrons employed in the local NHS has more than doubled since last year.

Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has had a modern matron committee since the term was coined back in 2000 and currently employs thirty Modern Matrons.

Our successful Matron’s Charter group meets regularly, bringing together not only matrons, but also representatives from key departments from across the Trust. This provides the Trust with an opportunity to greatly enhance patient experience quickly and effectively.

Matrons are strong, visible leaders on the ward, with the power to intervene on the spot for patients, their families and carers.

In particular, they have strong powers in the fight against hospital infections, including reporting at board level on infection control and cleanliness. Matrons have responsibility to help draw up cleaning contracts and to withhold payments if these fall below standards.Director of Nursing Maggie Arnold:

“Our modern matrons are providing clinical leadership at the front line, making sure patients get quality care in a safe, respectful and clean environment. They co-ordinate resources, resolve issues as soon as they occur and make sure staffing on our wards meet patient needs.

“They are helping to empower nurses and are ensuring that patients not only receive the highest standards of care, but know who to turn to when problems arise by having a visual presence on the wards and clinical areas”

The announcement follows a commitment made by the Prime Minister in September 2007 to double the number of Modern Matrons nationally to more than 5,000 by the end of May 2008.
