Statement: Neonatal services

17/06/2008

Divisional Director Service Delivery for Women and Children, Paul Byrne:

“Historically there have been problems with acquiring sufficient numbers of experienced neo natal nurses. This has always been a national problem which requires a national solution.

“Several years ago, we established our own investment programme to develop our own staff with extra neo natal nursing skills.

“Over the last year or so we have started to see the benefits of this programme by being able to fill more of our senior posts with internal candidates.

“Gloucester is a busy neo natal unit for the county and we have also recently had some success in recruiting experienced staff from elsewhere.

“In September 2008 five staff members will take a specialist neo natal course and whilst we would like to recruit more staff, we do not perhaps have the same level of problems of some units in other parts of the country.”
