Statement: Maternity Services in Cheltenham
27/06/2008
Following a release sent by the Conservative party regarding the loss of maternity services in Cheltenham, Divisional Director of Nursing and Midwifery Vivien Mortimore:
"Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust believes that expectant mothers should have choice which is why we are actively investing in a midwife-led maternity unit in Cheltenham. This is in addition to the new women’s centre at Gloucester which will have facilities for both complex and uncomplicated births and include an along side midwifery led birth unit.
"Due to open in 2011, these facilities will offer the women of Gloucestershire the full range of midwifery and obstetric facilities and the birth units will actively promote natural birth for those mums and babies who are not expected to need medical interventions.
"We see the Trusts maternity services as becoming a beacon for natural labour and birth and both mums and staff are getting involved in influencing the future facilities and services.
"The new-look maternity hospitals will bring the total number of midwife-led units in Gloucestershire to three, with Gloucester and Stroud in the west and south of the county and work to develop the skills of our midwives has already started.”
