Stagecoach West and Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has unveiled its brand new fleet of four buses to run on the brand new route 99 this week.

The investment is part of an ongoing campaign to encourage more people to leave their cars at home and travel by bus instead.

This partnership between Stagecoach West and the Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides passengers with a frequent shuttle bus between the two hospitals and a park and ride service from the Racecourse to Cheltenham General Hospital via the Town Centre. Hospital staff will also benefit from free travel to and from work within the county, easing pressure on both car parks and the region’s roads.

This agreement underlines both organisations’ commitment to providing people with a real alternative to the private car as the new Optare Solo low-floor buses represent the latest in clean engine technology, meeting Euro IV emissions standards and helping to cut carbon emissions. Each of the new buses provide step-free entrances, allowing customers to roll on wheelchairs, buggies or shopping trolleys and park them in dedicated areas on board.

To mark the investment, Ian Manning, Manager Director of Stagecoach West and Trust Chair Dame Janet Trotter officially launched the new fleet at Cheltenham General Hospital today.

Ian Manning, Managing Director Stagecoach West said:

"This is another excellent example of bus companies working with key local employers like the Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust on Green Transport Plans to the benefit of congestion and the environment, whilst simultaneously improving public transport links to the main hospitals for both staff and patients.”

Trust Chair Dame Janet Trotter added:

"I am delighted the Trust is partnering Stagecoach in this venture. We recognise that we have some car parking problems which affect patients and staff. This scheme will add further options for people travelling to our hospital sites and will support our aim to reduce carbon omissions in our urban areas”
