Snow Updates: Information for Patients and Staff

12/01/10

Hospital and Outpatient Clinics

Outpatient clinics at community hospitals remain open today (Monday 11th January 2010). Last week's cancelled appointments will be rearranged by the hospitals.

All clinics at Gloucestershire Royal and Cheltenham General Hospitals are open as usual, unless patients receive a phone call from the clinic, or the patient wishes to cancel.

Antenatal clinics for pregnant women

Antenatal clinics at GRH and CGH hospitals are still running today – Monday 11th January.

Our hospitals remain open, and we will continue to see emergency patients. To ensure the resources of the A&E department are directed at those people requiring emergency care, people are encouraged to ‘Choose Well’ and think about using the alternative NHS services available unless it is an emergency.

Click here to look at the Choose Well Glos website to see how you can access the most appropriate service

Alternatively, NHS Direct is available 24 hours a day via 0845 46 47 or www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk

Travelling concerns

We do want to ensure that patients do not feel they have to make unnecessary journeys to our hospitals if their treatment can be postponed until it is safe to travel. This is in line with guidance issued by the Highways Agency to car drivers to stay off the roads unless absolutely essential. If travelling by car we advise patients to ensure their car is fully fuelled, and to pack warm clothes, blankets, food, drink, a shovel/spade and take a mobile and in-car phone charger so that friends and relatives can be contacted if they do get stuck.

Message to staff and volunteers

A big thank you to all staff who have attended work through the snow especially the nurses and midwives who have worked so flexibly over the last few days. Thank you also to the volunteers of the Gloucestershire 4x4 Response Team who helped to bring in stranded nurses and midwives. Your efforts are very much appreciated. St John's Ambulance have also being doing invaluable work with two ambulances and crews helping to take home stranded patients.

We are looking for more nurses and midwives who might be able to get to CGH or GRH for shifts, particularly late and night shifts. Please contact your nearest hospital.
