Into Hospital and Home Again: an online leaflet
Having an Operation
If an operation or examination under anaesthetic is needed the doctor
will tell you why and explain what is going to happen. You will be asked
to read and sign a consent form which your doctor will discuss with you.
Your doctor will explain what operation will be done and why it is necessary
and the risks and benefits for the procedure. Your anaesthetist will
come and assess you on the ward before the operation and explain the
anaesthetic and pain relief to you.
The operation usually takes place
within a day or so of your arrival. It is quite natural to be nervous.
Don’t be afraid to say so and ask any questions you may have.
Occasionally
an operation has to be cancelled. If this should happen to you, a full
explanation will be given. If it is cancelled for reasons other than
your health it will be rearranged at the earliest opportunity. If you
have been on the waiting list you may be asked to go home while this
is done. We will make sure that you are readmitted and have your operation
no later than a month from the date it was cancelled.
