Professor Michael Orme M.A., M.D., D.Sc. (Hon), D.M. ( Hon ), FRCP. FFPM, FRCGP(Hon), FFPHM, F.Med Sci.

I was trained in medicine at Cambridge University and King’s College Hospital in London in the early 1960’s. I received my specialist training in Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics in London and at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm after which I was appointed to an academic consultant post at Liverpool University involved in patient care, teaching and research. I was promoted to a personal professorship in 1984. My research interests were in many aspects of drug therapy and, in particular, the treatment of tropical parasitic diseases.

In 1991 I was appointed as Dean of Faculty of Medicine at Liverpool University with particular responsibility for introducing a new medical undergraduate teaching curriculum. I left Liverpool University in 1996 to join the NHS Executive in NW England as Director of Education and Training which involved close working with the Department of Health in Leeds and London. I retired from the NHS in 2001 but continued working as a part time adviser to the Department of Health on a part time basis.

I have always had a close interest in administration and organisation and have been involved with a number of European and global organisations in my specialised field. For the last four years I have been chairman of the European Association for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics and am still closely involved in European matters in my discipline. For many years I have been involved with helping to develop medical schools in developing countries, particularly in the Far East and in the Persian Gulf. After an active academic and clinical life I am now working in retirement to help improve the care of patients in the Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
