Orthodontics

Introduction

Orthodontics is a specialised branch of dentistry concerned with the development and management of irregularities and abnormalities of the teeth, jaws and face. Its aim is to produce a healthy, functional bite, creating greater resistance to disease and improving personal appearance. This contributes to mental and physical well being.

Orthodontists are specialist dental surgeons who have undergone a formal specialist training in deformities affecting the position of teeth and facial growth. They are specialised dentists, who diagnose and treat abnormalities in the alignment of teeth and associated structures. They work closely with surgeons to perform surgical work, if required, prior to the use of orthodontic appliances (such as ‘braces’).

Services Provided

The Orthodontic Department consists of 2 Consultants, who work closely with their colleagues in the oral facial department. They are supported by a multi-disciplinary team so that they can offer a comprehensive orthodontic service for the county.

Each and every patient requires tailor-made treatment, which will be decided on by the Consultant and yourselves. It is always important to remember that treatment can continue for some time so you should always ensure that you are completely happy with the choices you make.

Information leaflets are available for many of the different options available to you and we encourage patients to ask questions in order to understand their treatment fully.
