Thoracic Medicine

Introduction

Thoracic Medicine is a sub-specialty of medicine encompassing diseases of the respiratory system. These include the upper airway, the lungs, the chest wall and the ventilatory control system.

Specialists in Thoracic medicine deal with various diseases affecting the lungs. Diseases due to smoking form a large part of their work - for instance lung cancer, the commonest form of cancer in the West, and chronic bronchitis and emphysema, another common problem due to smoking. Other diseases that they deal with include asthma, collapsed lungs, chest infections (pneumonia), and sleep disorders.
