Introduction
Thoracic Medicine is a sub-specialty of medicine encompassing diseases of the respiratory system. These include the upper airway, the lungs, the chest wall and the ventilatory control system.
Specialists in Thoracic medicine deal with various diseases affecting the lungs. Diseases due to smoking form a large part of their work - for instance lung cancer, the commonest form of cancer in the West, and chronic bronchitis and emphysema, another common problem due to smoking. Other diseases that they deal with include asthma, collapsed lungs, chest infections (pneumonia), and sleep disorders.
The Department provides the following Outpatient services:
• General Respiratory Service
• Sleep Service
• Allergy Service
• Suspected Respiratory Cancer Service

Inpatient Services are based at:
• Cheltenham General Hospital - Guiting Ward
• Gloucestershire Royal Hospital - Ward 8A and 8B
Thoracic surgery is provided by Mr Rajesh from Hartlands Hospital Birmingham. There are 2 clinics per month.
Our Staff
There are 7 Thoracic physicians who each lead a team of specialist doctors and nurses. As a patient you may be seen by the clinician or by a doctor or nurse within their team. The lead clinician has overall responsibilty for your care.
In addition to the two main Hospitals the Thoracic Physcians hold Outpatient Clinics at Berkeley, Cirencester, Dilke Memorial, Lydney, Stroud General and Tewkesbury Hospital.
Stroud General Hospital
Outpatient Clinics take place in both Bowbridge and Trinity Outpatient Departments.
