Introduction
The Gloucestershire Oncology Centre is located on the Cheltenham General Hospital site and provides comprehensive cancer services for a catchment population of just over 1 million people living in Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, South Worcestershire and parts of Shropshire & Powys. Clinics are held also in Gloucester, Hereford, Worcester, Lydney, Cirencester, Tewkesbury, Stroud and Berkeley.
Oncology Centre
The purpose built centre provides excellent accommodation for all inpatient, daycase and outpatient non-surgical oncology treatments. The accommodation includes: -
2 oncology wards, Lilleybrook and Rendcombe (44 beds)
a patient hostel (4 beds),
Selectron treatment rooms for the treatment of gynaecological cancers,
specialist palliative care services
chemotherapy suite
radiotherapy department
nuclear medicine department
cancer information centre
clinical trials department
inpatient and outpatients services for the treatment of patients with haematological malignancies e.g. leukaemia, including facilities for autologous stem cell transplantation.
A clinical cancer genetic service provides a weekly outpatient clinic alternating between Gloucester and Cheltenham .

Radiotherapy facilities include: -
CT planning
Simulator planning
A mould room to make treatment masks to keep patients in the correct position during treatment
A superficial X-ray machine for the treatment of skin cancer
4 linear accelerators (radiotherapy treatment machines). The department is being extended to accommodate a 5th machine and a spare bunker to allow us to replace machines without disrupting the service
a selectron machine for treatment of carcinoma of the cervix and endometrium
facilities for prostate brachytherapy-the treatment of prostate cancer by implanting radioactive seeds.
More than 20,000 chemotherapy treatments were given in 2006/7. Chemotherapy is carried out: -
in a dedicated outpatient suite in the Oncology Centre in Cheltenham . The new extention will provide further outpatient chemotherapy facilities.

A mobile chemotherapy unit that visits Cirencester and Ross on Wye Hospitals
The nursing staff provide a pre-chemotherapy clinic for newly diagnosed patients, consisting of drug and side effects information, and answer specific questions on their disease.
A chemotherapy helpline provides advice to patients receiving chemotherapy if they are experiencing severe side effects or symptoms of infection. This operates 24 hours a day, 7 days per week.
The Oncology Centre participates in a large number of national and international studies aimed at improving the results for patients with cancer. A team of clinical trials nurses support patients in making the decision as to whether they wish to enter the studies and in supporting them through the treatment. They provide a service to Cheltenham, Worcester, Gloucester and Hereford clinics.
The palliative care team are based in the oncology centre and provide advice on the management of patients who are being treated as either inpatients or outpatients.
This is based at the Gloucestershire Oncology Centre at Cheltenham General Hospital. A wide range of books and leaflets on both conventional and complementary therapies are stocked. Advice about: -

Our Staff
There are 11 Oncologists who lead a team of specialist doctors and nurses. As a patient you may be seen by the Consultant or a doctor or nurse within their team. The Consultant has overall responsibilty for your care.
In addition to the two main Hospitals the General Surgeons hold Outpatient Clinics at Berkeley, Cirencester, Hereford, Lydney, Stroud, Tewkesbury and Worcester.
