Introduction
Palliative care doctors are trained to relieve suffering and improve the quality of life for people who are living with or dying from advanced illness or are bereaved.
The palliative care team assist those planning treatment, care and support for patients and their families who require supportive and palliative care within Gloucestershire. The majority of the services mentioned are specifically for patients and carers of those who have been diagnosis with a life threatening illness and are provided by trained teams of doctors, nurses, and other professionals. Some of the teams identified may appear to provide a similar service but often they compliment each by working in partnership.

There are 2 Palliative Care Consultants who lead a team of specialist doctors and nurses. As a patient you may be seen by the clinician or by a doctor or nurse within his team. The clinician has overall responsibilty for your care.

MacMillan Senior Social Worker
I am social worker with the Specialist Palliative Care Team, based at Cheltenham General Hospital with my health service colleagues. I am part of the hospital based team, I also outreach into the community, working closely with the Community Macmillan Nurses. As senior social worker for the service, I have a countywide remit, and apart from providing a social work support service to patients and their families or carers, my role includes bereavement support, staff supervision, education and service development.
I graduated from Manchester University in 1970 with an honours degree in Psychology, and gained my social work qualification in 1973.The majority of my career has been spent in hospital social work. My interest in palliative care began in 1994, when I became oncology social worker at Cheltenham General Hospital. I gained a certificate in counselling skills in 1997, and in 2000, I joined the Specialist Palliative Care Team, where I continue to enjoy a varied and challenging role.

Macmillan Clinical Psychologist
Diana has worked with the Palliative Care Team at Cheltenham General Hospital for four years, and her office is located on Rendcomb Ward at Cheltenham General Hospital.
Diana is a Clinical Psychologist and works in the hospital team and in the community, providing a service to people who are ill and their families. Diana has a particular interest and experience in working with families where there are young children, and in providing group work opportunities.
Diana also provides multi disciplinary education across the county, and has an interest in resource development.

Specialist Palliative Care Social Worker
After working for the NHS since 1976 in a nursing capacity, Sue joined Gloucestershire Social Services in 1992 working in both Adult and Children’s services. Sue joined the Social Work Team at Cheltenham General Hospital in 2001, spending 12 months covering the Oncology department and qualified as a Social Worker in 2002 from the University of Gloucestershire. Sue joined the Palliative Care Team at Gloucester Royal Hospital in December 2004.

Since July 2005, Sue has been employed as Head of Specialty (Palliative Care) in the Health Psychology Department, Gloucestershire Royal Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. She is responsible for the management of the psychologists who work within the Oncology, Haematology and Palliative Care (OHP) clinical service directorate of the trust and the leadership and development of psychological care in OHP. She is a member of the palliative care team at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital.
She has worked for six years in mental health services for working age adults in the county, before leading the development of psychological services in a regional renal unit based in Bristol for over 7 years. In her work in Bristol she developed an interest in the care of elderly renal patients and participated in service developments for supportive care in the renal field.
Anna Pullen
MacMillan Psychologist
Since qualifying as a Clinical Psychologist in 2002, Anna has worked at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital for the past 2 ½ years in Palliative Care. She also works for the staff support service based at the Health Psychology Department
The team offers specialist care to people affected by life threatening illness, their families, friends and carers from initial diagnosis through active treatment and during the palliative phase.
Macmillan Specialist Nurses are an integral part of the Palliative Care Team which includes consultants, social workers and clinical psychologists.
They often work with other health professionals who may already be involved with the patient's care.
They offer the following with the aim of improving quality of life
• information and advice on pain and symptom management, illness progression, treatments, services and financial benefits
• psychological and social support to help people increase their understanding of what is happening and gain some control over their lives
• consultancy and advice based on current research to assist other health professionals and volunteers
• staff development which includes formal and informal training programmes
• individual and group support
• bereavement support
Referrals and contact
Self referrals are accepted as well as referrals from health professionals who may be involved in the patient care.
On receipt of referral a letter is sent to the patient with a team leaflet listing contact details. Telephone contact is usually made between seven to ten working days and then a visit arranged as necessary.

Clinical Nurse Specialist in Palliative Care
I have been part of the specialist palliative care team at Cheltenham General Hospital for 8 years. Previous to this I was a ward sister on Lilleybrook ward which is one of the oncology wards here at Cheltenham. I am married with a grown-up son and daughter and live on the outskirts of Cheltenham.
I qualified as a SRN in 1975 and went on to gain my ENB certificate in oncology at the Royal Marsden Hospital in 1978, and subsequently certificates in teaching and assessing, care of the dying, research, quality of nursing care, ethics and law, counselling skills, and management More recently I have obtained a diploma in palliative care, a BSc in community studies and independent and supplementary nurse prescribing.
Helen Morris
Clinical Nurse Specialist in Palliative Care
As a sister in the palliative care team my role involves working alongside the rest of the palliative care MDT, assessing patients holistically and advising on appropriate form of action/care, to ease the patient’s journey through their illness. We address symptom issues, psychological, social and family using appropriate team members to deliver this care. Qualifications include RGN, Dip Orthopaedics, Dip Pal care, Teaching and assessing in practice level 3.

Denise has worked at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital since 1998 as a CNS. Previous nursing experience has included working at St Christopher’s Hospice, the Royal Marsden Hospital, and spending 4 years as Senior Nurse in a local hospice.

After completing her nurse training in Gloucestershire Royal Hospital in January 1993, Anna joined the Palliative Care Team in 1999. She has just graduated from the University of Gloucestershire with a First Class Hons Decree and has a special interest in CJD.

Sue Beale has worked part time in the NHS as a secretary for 5 years before joining the palliative care team in 2004 and provides administration and secretarial support to the multi-disciplinary Palliative Care team at Cheltenham General Hospital.
