Orthopaedic Outpatients Department
The department is located in College Road Wing, adjacent to the Emergency Department. The nearest car park is College Road; there is a lift which can take patients down to level 1.
Within the department we have Fracture/Trauma clinic, Orthopaedic clinic and Plaster Room. We have 9 examination rooms, 4 consulting rooms, reception area and waiting room which has a children’s play facility.
The department is led by a senior sister with support from junior sister, staff nurses and health care assistants. We also have student nurses who work under supervision as well as relief staff depending on staffing levels.
We have eleven orthopaedic consultants who are supported by Registrars and four associate specialist doctors. We have junior doctors who attend clinic for teaching purposes and they are supported by consultants, associate specialists and registrars.
The department is very busy and often there is more than one clinic running at a time, there can be up to five doctors working within the department.
When you arrive in the department you are asked to report to the receptionist who will take your name and ask you to take a seat, your medical notes will then be passed to the nursing team who will initiate the next stage in your treatment plan e.g. go for a x ray or have your plaster removed prior to seeing the doctor. Please remember that although you may be booked into a consultant’s clinic you may not see them but a member of the medical team. If your appointment is an Arthroplasty Review you will be sent for an x ray and given a questionnaire to complete prior to seeing a Nurse Practitioner, this is a specialist nurse who has undertaken further training to enable them to assess your replacement joint.

We also see patients that the Emergency Department send directly to us so please be understanding if a delay should occur.
