Your First Attendance
You will be assessed by a doctor, nurse and therapists. During your assessment you will be asked questions about your day-to-day activities and general health. It would be a help, if you could bring with you your medication list and any medication you may need during your stay. After your assessment you may be asked to follow a home programme of exercises. We may ask you to attend the Unit for a course of treatment depending on your individual needs. It may be necessary for you to have tests or to see other members of the multidisciplinary team during your stay, to further monitor your health needs, e.g. Clinical Psychologist, Dietician etc.
We will provide beverages. There are suitable toilet facilities for the disabled. Wheelchairs and walking aids are available for use.
Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA) Clinic
There are specific TIA Clinics for patients who may have suffered a TIA. Patients attending a TIA Clinic will be seen by a Consultant and a Nurse and you will have a thorough assessment. It may also be necessary for you to have a CT head scan, a carotid duplex scan and other investigations e.g. ECG, blood on the day or as an outpatient. Due to the nature of the clinic, patients are advised they may need to be at the hospital for a long period.
Falls Clinics
Patients attending a Falls Clinic will be assessed by a Consultant, Nurse and a Falls Prevention Officer as appropriate. You will have a thorough assessment and it may be necessary to have other tests, e.g. an ECG and blood tests. A diagnosis and treatment plan will be discussed with you. You may then be asked to attend a Falls Prevention Exercise Class (Active Balance Classes), return to the ARU or an outpatient clinic for a follow up appointment.
Your General Practitioner will be informed of our findings from all the above mentioned clinics.

Cleanliness and Infections in Hospital
There are containers of alcohol gel around the ARU on entrance and around the department for disinfecting of hands.
Hand washing. The most common means by which infection is transmitted is by hand; therefore hand washing is a very basic, yet vital infection control measure. Alcohol hand gel is kept at the entrance of the unit for all visitors to use before and after attending appointments. For hygienic hand disinfection apply 3ml (3 shots) to physically clean hands for 30 seconds ensuring all areas are covered, until dry.
